High-Performing HR Compass

Our HR maturity and capability assessment: a clear picture of where your healthcare HR function stands and a prioritized path forward.

Before you can transform an HR function, you need an honest answer to a hard question: where does HR actually stand today? Not where the org chart says it stands, and not where the last engagement survey suggested. The High-Performing HR Compass is our capability and maturity assessment, built to give healthcare executives and HR leaders that answer, along with a prioritized path forward.

The Compass is a focused diagnostic. It examines how HR is structured, what it is capable of, how leaders experience it, and what is keeping it from operating as a strategic partner. It is the Diagnose phase of our approach delivered as a standalone offering, and it is often the first step organizations take with us.

The result is not a generic maturity score. It is a clear, specific picture of your function, in your healthcare context, with recommendations you can act on.

What the Compass assesses

We look across the full HR function: operating model and structure, role clarity, service delivery, business partnering, talent acquisition, total rewards, employee relations, technology and data, and HR team capability and culture. We also assess the relationship between HR and the leaders it serves, because a function that is technically sound but not trusted is not high-performing.

Each area is evaluated against what a high-performing healthcare HR function looks like, informed by decades of executive experience inside academic medical centers and health systems.

We also look at the connections between areas, because that is where most functions break down. A talent acquisition team can be strong on its own and still fail if workforce planning never tells it what is coming. An HRBP model can be well designed and still collapse under an unmanaged employee relations case load. The Compass maps those dependencies so the recommendations address causes rather than symptoms.

How we gather the picture

The Compass combines document and data review with structured conversations. We talk with the CEO and executive team, clinical and operational leaders, frontline managers, and the HR team itself. Those perspectives rarely agree, and the gaps between them are often the most important finding.

We keep the process efficient and respectful of clinical leaders' time. The goal is insight, not a lengthy study.

Wherever possible we use data the organization already has: turnover and vacancy by unit, time-to-fill, engagement results, employee relations volumes, and HR team capacity. Bringing those together in one view is often revealing on its own, and it means the Compass does not depend on new surveys or long data collection efforts.

What you receive

You receive a candid assessment of strengths, gaps, and barriers, presented in a way that executives can engage with. Alongside it, we deliver a prioritized and sequenced set of recommendations: what to address first, what can wait, and what will require a broader effort.

Many organizations use the Compass to align the executive team on the case for HR investment, to give a new CHRO a clear starting point, or to decide whether a full HR Renewal Roadmap is the right next step.

After the Compass

Some organizations act on the findings with their own teams. Others ask us to continue into design and delivery through the HR Renewal Roadmap or a targeted service such as operating model redesign or HRBP capability-building. Either path is a good outcome. Scope is set after an initial consultation.

FAQ

High-Performing HR Compass: Common Questions

What is an HR maturity assessment?

It is a structured evaluation of how capable and effective an HR function is across its operating model, services, team, technology, and relationships with leaders. The High-Performing HR Compass is our version, built specifically for healthcare organizations.

How long does the High-Performing HR Compass take?

It is designed as a focused diagnostic rather than a lengthy study. The exact timeline depends on the size of the organization and the number of leaders involved, and it is set after an initial consultation.

Who do you talk to during the assessment?

The CEO and executive team, clinical and operational leaders, frontline managers, and the HR team. The differences between how these groups see HR are often the most useful finding.

Is the Compass only for organizations planning a full transformation?

No. Some organizations use it to give a new CHRO a baseline, to align the executive team, or to decide what to prioritize with their own teams. It stands on its own.

What do we receive at the end?

A candid assessment of strengths, gaps, and barriers, plus a prioritized and sequenced set of recommendations, presented in a form executives can act on.

What happens after the assessment?

You can act on the findings internally, or continue with us into design and delivery through the HR Renewal Roadmap or a targeted service. We will help you choose the right next step.
